    January 2009 has arrived. Typically the first of any year is a time for new beginnings-a fresh start. A new year is a time to set goals, reflect on past decisions and renew commitments. As you make your New Year's resolution list for 2009, here are a couple ideas you may want to consider.

    Finally, there is no better place than the Monterey Peninsula to reflect on the past year and prepare for the new.     Twist & Shout 2009 Tribute Concert

    Golden Bough Playhouse

    Regular performances will be on Saturday and Sunday, December 27 and 28, 2008; and Friday thru Sunday, January 2 - 4, 2009. Friday & Saturday performances are at 7:30pm, and Sunday matinees are at 2:00pm. New Years festivities scheduled for Wednesday December 31st, with a start time of 8:30 p.m., include desserts, wine, and dancing.
    Audiences will be encouraged to "dance in the aisles" at the Golden Bough Playhouse with performances that will shake, rattle and roll with "Chuck Berry", "Elvis", "Leslie Gore" "Ritchie Valens", "Sam Cooke', "Dusty Springfield", "Bob Dylan" and more - created live on stage by PacRep favorites including Don Dally on lead guitar and guest vocalists Davitt Felder, Lydia Lyons, Charmaigne Scott and Daniel Simpson. Regular performance ticket prices range from $16 - $35 and New Years Eve party tickets (including refreshments) are $75. Ticket purchases can be charged by phone by calling the box office at (831) 622-0100 or in-person at the Golden Bough Playhouse on Monte Verde Street between 8th and 9th Avenues, Carmel-by-the-Sea.

    Composer Jean Sibelius captured an icy landscape in music. His First Symphony is one of his most dramatic expressions of orchestral picture-painting (Symphony No.1 in E minor, Op.39). Spanish pianist Pedro Carbone performs Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto (in A minor, Op.54), arguably one of the most popular concertos in the repertoire. Conductor Max Bragado-Darman introduces us to Beethoven's Second Overture for his Opera Leonore (later published as Fidelio). This work contains many of the Opera's most memorable melodies.     The Wine Estate's first 2009 educational World of Wine Series will highlight "Basic Wine Components" on January 7, 2009 from 6:00 - 7:30pm, hosted by Chateau Julien Viticulturist & Winemaker Marta Kraftzeck. The monthly World of Wine Series focuses on the history, growing conditions and uniqueness of wine regions throughout the world, and will feature such countries as South Africa, France and Spain in the upcoming months. For a complete list of featured countries, please visit the "News & Event" section of the Chateau Julien website. The cost is $40 per person; club members $35 per person. For those interested in joining multiple sessions, World Traveler Cards are also available for a special rate of $240 / six classes.


    Barrel Tasting and Futures Open House

    The new "Barrel Tasting and Futures Open House" on January 17, 2009 will give guests the opportunity to taste aging wines in 60-gallon oak barrels and purchase a selection of Private Reserve varietals at significantly reduced "futures" pricing. Only the first 100 cases of select varietals and vintages are reserved as futures, each signed by Winemaker Bill Anderson upon release in summer 2009. The Open House will be from 11am to 4pm and cost is $10 per person; club members are complimentary.

    "Monterey On Ice" returns to Monterey for the Holiday Season. The popular ice skating rink will be located at the Custom House Plaza near Old Fisherman's Wharf for 2008. The Rink offers Ice Skating by the Bay and great fun for everyone including open skating, private parties, fund-raising opportunities, group and school functions and ice skating lessons. Ice Skate rentals will be available at the rink. Experience the Magic of the Season - Ice Skating in Monterey! Cost for skaters is $12 for adults and $10 for children (age 12 and under). No charge for spectators. The rink will be open from noon to 10pm Monday through Friday and from 10am to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday.     Over 1500 people enjoy the Clam Chowder Dinner, held early in the year in the Orradre Building at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds. Featuring the famous Lloyd Atwater clam chowder recipe, diners get all-you-can-eat clam chowder, rolls, fresh salad and homemade pie for dessert. A wine and soda bar is available. Dinner guests get to place bids at the silent auction featuring a variety of antiques, photo replicas from the museum's collection and homebaked pies and cakes. The Clam Chowder Dinner has become a community favorite.

    Kay Villalobos: Auspicious Spirits

    This exhibition by Carmel artist Kay Villalobos, who has been paralyzed since an auto accident in 1997, features artfully rendered mannequins, adorned altar chairs, and distinctive collaged mannequin hands. Villalobos uses mixed media including paint, feathers, fur, glass, stones and collected images to make her unique pieces. She envisions her art then directs the hands of an assistant to prepare what she envisions.
