The 580 glass prisms of the historic Fresnel lens from the Point Sur Lightstation illuminate the Museum and its exhibit areas, from the Rumsien/Ohlone Indians and Spanish explorers, to the area shipwreck USS Macon and military presence, to Monterey’s era as the sardine capital of the world, and the Hotel Del Monte, fabled destination of tourism's early days.

Next Generation Jazz Festival

Every spring, Monterey Jazz Festival invites the top student musicians from across the country and around the world to participate in the Next Generation Jazz Festival.
The three-day event includes performances by middle school through college level ensembles as well as competitions, with awards going to the top groups for High School, Conglomerate, and College Big Band Divisions; for High School and College Vocal Ensembles; for High School Combos; and for our newest component, the Open Combo Division for high school conglomerate and college level ensembles. The event also includes Next Generation Jazz Festival's annual Composition Competition, open to high school composers or younger.

The Great Pacific Race is the biggest, baddest human endurance challenge on the planet. Ocean row boats of one, two and four compete against each other in the world’s first rowing race on the Pacific. On June 7th 2014 our teams from around the world will set out on a 2,400 mile journey on the world’s largest ocean from Monterey, California to Honolulu, Hawaii. This epic journey is expected to take between 30 and 90 days depending on the size of the crew and the weather. Each boat carries no sails or engines and is only moved by the muscle of the crew pulling on the oars.

Monthly twilight rides allow cyclists to experience the excitement of pedaling Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, an 11-turn, 2.238-mile course. The ride is highlighted by the legendary Corkscrew turn that drops an equivalent of 5 1/2 stories. Rides generally run from 5:30–7:30 p.m. (5-7 p.m. in the winter months), and are open to all levels of cyclists. Helmets are required and the cost is $10 per rider.

All eyes will be looking up at the winter sky beginning at 10:30 am awaiting the delivery from helicopter of Santa and Mrs. Claus. Greeted by holiday music, Santa and Mrs. Claus will make their way through the crowd to their sleigh pulled by volunteer “reindeer”.

With over 150 pre professional dancers on stage, the season’s traditional MUST SEE event will bring out the magical child inside all of us. Twirling baby ballerina dolls and precious five year old ornaments grace the elegant opening scene of the Silberhaus home at the turn of the century. The magnificent fight scene thrills attendees and promises a delightful theatre experience for all ages.
