Monterey Now: Johnny Apodaca
February 1, 2013
5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Monterey
The Monterey Museum of Art
The natural world is the origin and inspiration for all of Apodaca’s work. He follows the honorable tradition of painting en plein air (in the open air). Carrying his paints, brushes, and a small easel, he tracks down the perfect vantage point from which to work. This engagement with nature is integral to his process. Monterey’s familiar landforms take on iconic meaning for him and he paints them often. In his oil painting, La Montagna (one of many inspired by Mt. Toro), a hazy sun peeks through a cloud-covered sky and spreads its glow over the land, suffusing the turquoise green sea with pale gold.
